Ethir Neechal Movie Review and Rating

Ethir Neechal is the most expected film among the three of the May Day 2013 releases as it happens to be the debut production venture of Dhanush. Sivakarthikeyan and Priya Anand play the lead roles, while Satish, Nandita and Jayaprakash appear in supporting roles. Velraj's cinematography, Kishore Te's editing and Anirudh's music are the technical highlights of the film.

Story :
Sivakarthikeyan plays the role of Kunjithapatham, who is brought up by his mom from his young age. He dislikes his name to the core as people make fun of him by calling him by his first name Kunji, which means dick in Tamil.

After his mom's death, Kunjithapatham decides to change his name to Harish. Immediately after changing his name he meets Geetha (Priya Anand) and falls in live with her at first sight. With his repeated efforts he manages to earn Geetha's love and now we get to feel the first speed bump in the the smooth ride.

Geetha somehow gets to know that Harish's original name his Kunjithapatham and he had lied to her that he is a teetotaler. Geetha advices Harish to be confident enough to face humiliation at any point of time and asks him to achieve something great to make his name proud. For this Harish sets his eyes on the Chennai Marathon event and what happens next is for you to watch.

Review :
We must say that director RS Durai Senthilkumar has made an impression as a filmmaker capable of delivering a film packed with essential commercial elements and strong content.

The screenplay of the film is well planned in a way that it takes us on a joyful ride in the first half. The second half is more content oriented and travels in brisk pace as well.

The director's thought of bringing in the injustice and corruption prevailing in the sports ministry under the scanner is appreciable. With Ethir Neechal we get a chance to get educated on what is a marathon and what all it takes to be a marathon champion. Aspiring athletes will love this film.

We get to see the first two songs in quick succession, but, apart from it all the rest of the songs are inserted in appropriate and most needed areas. 'Local Boys' song featuring Dhanush and Nayantgara is a foot tapping fast folk number.

Sivakarthikeyan's role in the first half is nothing new to what he has played in films like ‘Manam Kothi Paravai’ and ‘Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga’. The second half which sees him training hard for the marathon is an example for the extra effort he has put in for the film. This makes his role more valuable.

It wouldn't be much words to say that Ethir Neechal will be a break for actor Satish as his comedy is a great plus to the film. His combination with Sivakarthikeyan brings the roof down and he has definitely improved as a comedian. His one-line punches are really a treat to listen.

Priya Anand comes around as a beautiful looking middle-class girl, who multi-tasks to change the economic status of her family. Her lip sync is good, expressions are natural and not overdone. The lady also looks glamorous in the songs and what more do we need from a heroine.

Nandita as Sivakarthikeyan's coach is a key role upon which the second half is completely woven. Through this role the director throws light in the injustice in the sports industry and showcases the hard work being put by every aspiring athlete.

Anirudh's background score are apt, especially in the sequences where Sivakarthikeyan is seen training vigorously for the marathon. ‘Boomi Enna’, ‘Ethir Neechal Adi’ and ‘Local Boys’ are the  chart busters from the album.

Cinematographer Velraj's cinematography can be felt in the songs and in the marathon race which includes a lot of slow motion shots. Editor Kishore Te has neatly edited the film which offers a friction-free running for the film.

Verdict : Ethir Neechal in Life Ocean
Rating   : 4 / 5
