Neethaane En Ponvasantham is a musical
romantic drama which unites the romance specialist Gautham Vasudev Menon and
Ilayaraja together. MS Prabhu, Om Prakash have handled the cinematography,
Anthony has done the edit work and RS Infotainment has produced the flick.
Plot :
Varun (played by Jeeva) and Nithya
Vasudevan (played by Samatha) are childhood friends, who have interest for each
other right from childhood.
They both part ways for petty quarrels
during their childhood and happen to meet each other once again in a tuition
center while studying 10th standard. There comes issues between them once
again, but this time out of possessiveness which indicated they are grown ups.
Fate works 24/7 to reunite them once again,
and this time their reunion happens in a college cultural hosted by Varun's
college. Nithya and Varun get in touch with each other and eventually find
their lost love and get closer.
The story rolls over to a different state
when Jeeva is struck by a brain wave seeing the financial situation of his
family. Jeeva, who leads a carefree life until then, decides to go for higher
studies (M.B.A in IIM) and indulges in it whole-heartedly.
Nithya, who is born rich, doesn't have much
committed work to do and hence becomes too dependent on Varun. At a certain
point Nithya feels that Varun is drifting away from her and decides to sort out
the issue which breaks out into a big fight. The couple part ways here and the
next, for us, is the second half loaded with twists which gives an end to the
tale.
Review :
Neethaane En Ponvasantham is yet another
practical love story from Gautham Menon presented in his very own style with
the magical touch of Isaignani Ilayaraja's music.
Coming to the acting, the lead pair Jeeva
and Samantha stand out with their realistic performance. Be it emotion,
romance, anger or possessiveness, both the actors have neither underplayed it
nor overdone it, rather have delivered it subtly.
Gautham Vasudev Menon needs special
applause for his twist in the screenplay where Varun shifts focus to his family
from Nithya. This twist which turns the tale upside down, has a weight logic
behind and is unarguably practical.
Gautham Menon has used Santhanam as more
than a mere stress buster. Though he makes us laugh with every single bit of his
appearance in the first half, Santhanam behaves like a matured supportive
friend of Jeeva, but doesn't miss on his humor.
The songs, except a few, which sounded
better for us while hearing the album alone have not got the extra boost along
with the picturization. Otherwise, the sound tracks have proven useful for the
director to rush through certain portions of the film.
The maestro has done a great job with his
orchestration, but the generation gap makes the audience feel it as a bit
old-fashioned at times.
Gautham Menon has repeated a few things
which we've seen in his films regularly like the hero setting off in search of
heroine, naming of the characters etc. The end should have been made more
crisp.
Verdict : Yet another practical love story
which lags a bit in the ending
Rating : 3 / 5
