29 Movie Review
Vithu, the protagonist, lives in Salem with his family. Despite having turned 29, he is still on a quest to discover his true identity. He moves to Chennai in search of employment, and—coincidentally—the female lead, Preethi, joins the very same company where he works. As they interact and build a friendship, their bond eventually blossoms into romance.
At this juncture, Vithu begins to define his entire identity solely through his relationship with Preethi—living as "Preethi's boyfriend." Preethi, however, has harbored a lifelong ambition since childhood: to study for and become a District Collector. This divergence in their life goals leads to a separation between the two.
Subsequently, having failed to perform well in the Collector entrance examinations, Preethi leaves town and heads to Delhi. Heartbroken by the failure of his romance, Vithu returns to his hometown, where he becomes involved in a protest against a college that has been illegally constructed by encroaching upon a canal.
As a result of his activism, Vithu is imprisoned; once inside, his adversaries plot to have him murdered while in custody. The remainder of the film '29' explores whether Vithu manages to emerge from prison alive, whether he succeeds in establishing his own distinct identity for the world to recognize, and whether the romance between Vithu and Preethi ultimately reaches a successful conclusion.
Vithu, playing the character of Sathya, fits the role of an energetic and spirited young man perfectly. He has beautifully internalized the various facets of his character—encompassing romance, filial affection for his mother, and social consciousness—delivering a deeply emotional performance. He is particularly impressive in the action sequences, where he displays great intensity. If he continues to select and star in films with such compelling storylines, he is certain to carve out a unique and prominent niche for himself within Tamil cinema.
Preethi Asrani, who portrays the female lead 'Viji,' is not only visually charming but also captivates the audience with her nuanced and restrained performance. He has beautifully expressed, through his performance, the emotional turmoil of being caught between love and ambition.
Master Mahendran, who plays an antagonist, has executed his role flawlessly. Avinash, playing the protagonist's friend, delivers a performance—particularly in his lamentations over a failed romance—that is both entertaining and humorous.
The supporting cast—including Adhira Pandilakshmi as the protagonist's mother, Sindhu Shyam as the heroine's mother, and Premkumar as the heroine's father—proves to be the perfect choice for their respective roles, fitting seamlessly into the narrative.
Composer Sean Roldan’s music is melodious, and his background score flows in perfect harmony with the storyline. Madhesh Manickam’s cinematography serves as a significant asset to the film.
Director Rathna Kumar has crafted a screenplay centered on the core theme that lovers require an identity of their own—going beyond the mere expression of romance. Kudos to the director for delivering a film that appeals to a universal audience by seamlessly blending elements of ambition, maternal affection, and social consciousness alongside the central love story.
