Actor battles liver cirrhosis while making a stunning comeback in psychological drama

In a rare tale of resilience both on and off the screen, actor Abhinay, once a rising star who debuted alongside Dhanush, is making an emotional and dramatic return to Tamil cinema with his upcoming film, ‘Game of Loans’. The film, a dark psychological drama, marks his comeback in a powerful antagonist role—his most intense performance to date.

 But behind the cameras, Abhinay is fighting a far more personal battle: he is undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis, a condition that has threatened not just his career, but his life.

Abhinay's journey has always been unique. He entered the film industry with promise, sharing his debut platform with Dhanush, who would go on to become one of Indian cinema's most celebrated stars. While Dhanush had the advantage of guidance from his brother, acclaimed director Selvaraghavan, Abhinay’s rise was more solitary. Despite having cinema in his blood—his mother being a National Award-winning actress —Abhinay’s path in the industry was far from easy.

 

“I didn’t have a mentor, but I had my mother’s belief in craft, passion, and truth,” Abhinay said in a recent conversation. “That belief kept me going even when the screen forgot me.”

 Now, after years of silence, the screen is paying attention again.

 In ‘Game of Loans’, Abhinay plays a ruthless loan shark—a manipulative predator who preys on the vulnerable, drawing them into a spiral of debt, desperation, and psychological destruction. Set entirely in one location, the film delves deep into the power dynamics between lender and borrower, addiction and entrapment, morality and madness.

Director Abhishek spoke of casting Abhinay in the pivotal role:  “When I began envisioning Game of Loans, I knew the character demanded an actor of rare depth—someone who could carry the same intensity and layered presence that legends like Raguvaran once brought to the screen. It wasn’t about imitation, but about evoking that same aura—where every glance, pause, and silence speaks louder than words. In Abhinay, I found exactly that..”

 

With ‘Game of Loans’ set to release later this year, audiences will finally see a side of Abhinay that has long remained untapped. But for the actor himself, the movie is more than a comeback—it’s a tribute to survival.

 “This may be my last film,” he admits, “or it may be my new beginning. Either way, I gave it everything.”

 In an industry where fame is fleeting and comebacks are rare, Abhinay’s return is nothing short of extraordinary. His story isn’t just about reclaiming lost time—it’s about confronting mortality with courage, and turning pain into performance.
