In 1936 the Olympic Games were held in Berlin, Germany. Organized by the ruling Nazi-Party, the games were intended to showcase Hitler’s vision of the supremacy of the Aryan race. That Nazi dream was shattered by a black American athlete named Jesse Owens (John Boyega).

Born into poverty and having grown up in an America that was itself stricken with racial prejudice, Jesse Owens stands out, from a young age, as an extraordinary athlete. He knows that running is his ticket to freedom, and the only way he can make a life for his wife and baby daughter. He joins the best track and field programme in the country at Ohio State University, and is taken under the wing of their innovative coach, Larry Snider, who is determined that Jesse will bring him the victory he once craved as an athlete. Larry and Jesse form a close friendship as they fight to win, and also fight the prejudice they encounter at every turn. Jesse soon becomes a national celebrity as he breaks world records and overwhelms the competition. But as the American Olympic committee is faced with the possibility of a national boycott of the games, Jesse battles with whether he can condone Nazi racism by competing in the Olympics, when he knows only too well how it feels. Ultimately he decides that defeating them on the field will be the best form of revenge, and heads off to the games with his coach by his side.

In Berlin Jesse faces the challenge of his life, but his grace and technical genius make him the star of the games. The German public becomes enthralled by this new champion, and a young filmmaker named Leni Riefenstahl becomes obsessed with capturing his magnificent athleticism on film. Jesse even gains the support and enduring friendship of his German opponent, enraging Hitler with the affront to his prejudiced ideals. Jesse wins a record of four Gold Medals, shattering Olympic records that would take decades to break, and defying the political boundaries that threatened to keep him down.

Based on the incredible true story of an Olympic legend, RACE is an enthralling film about courage, determination, and friendship and an inspiring drama about how one man fought against history, and won.
