Review :

Tharai Thappattai is a 2016 Tamil musical drama film written, produced and directed by Bala. The film features Sasikumar and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in the leading roles, while Ilaiyaraaja composes the film's music based on karakattam. Sannasi (Sasikumar) is a multi-talented folk dancer in a village living with his father Samipulavan (G. M. Kumar). Samipulavan was once a great singer and thavil expert who stopped performing singing and playing thavil because of the indecent content in the folk dances by the younger generation in recent years. Sooravali (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) is Sannasi's cousin and a member of his troupe, who loves Sannasi a lot and expresses her love often. Sannasi doesn't reciprocate though. Another character Karuppaiah (R. K. Suresh) often interrupts the male performers in the group wherever they go, to know more about their programme.

The troupe get a chance to perform on Andaman, and travels there on a passenger ship with the help of the organizers. They stay in a hotel provided by the organizers. Post the programme, the organizers reveal their lecherous intentions and ask Sannasi to take them to the girls for sex. Sannasi mocks them by showing them the girls and asks them to leave. This results in a fight, with Sooravali bashing the organizers like a woman possessed. The organizers are badly injured and in turn they tear the return tickets to main land India taking revenge on them. That night the group of dancers could not find a shelter and sleeps in the road. After a fair amount of struggle to earn money, so that they can return to their village, they finally manage to earn some money, thanks to Sooravali's love for Sannasi.

Post their return, One day Karuppaiah takes Sannasi to a hotel and expresses his love towards Sooravali, asking Sannasi's help to get married to her. Getting irked with him, Sannasi ends up thrashing him in public. After a few days, Karuppaiah meets Sooravalis mother and convinces her to give Sooravali in marriage to him. She in turn, talks to Sannasi and make him feel guilty of holding on to Sooravali and begs him to let Sooravali go, for a better life. Though his first attempt to convince Sooravali fails, Sannasi drinks liquor that night and forces Sooravali into accepting the marriage. On the night of the marriage however, part of Karuppaiah's facade is revealed.

Tharai Thappattai is an intense drama in which Sasikumar and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar have come out with flying colours. The film has a raw screenplay packed with emotions. The cinematography by Chezhiyan was good supported by a tight editing by Sasikumar. The supporting cast such as GM Kumar and Amudhavaanan did great job along with the rest. The music of the film scores a great appeal apart from acting. This will mark 1000th film for Maestro Illayaraja, who has scored a brilliant soundtrack for Thaara Thappattai.

Rating : 3/5
