Review :
Thoongaa Vanam directed by Rajesh M. Selva starring Kamal Hassan, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Kishore and Asha Sarath. The film, a bi-lingual was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Cheekati Rajyam with the same cast, was jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sri Gokulam Movies.
The movie revolves around Diwakar( Kamal Haasan) who is a cop. The first scenes open with Kamal and his colleague Mani (Yugi Sethu) shooting a guy dead and making off with a black bag. We are then introduced to Mallika (Trisha), another cop, who is investigating this man's murder. Diwakar has a son and his ex-wife and he shares custody of him. The next thing we know is that Diwakar's son is kidnapped by Vittal Rao (Prakash Raj). Why was he kidnapped? What was in that black bag?
The movie begins with Diwakar (Kamal Haasan), an officer of the Narcotics Control Bureau, and his deputy Mani (Yugi Sethu), busting a narcotics scam. In retribution, Vittal Rao (Prakash Raj), a drug smuggler who had masterminded the scam, kidnaps Diwakar's son Vasu (Aman Abdullah). He is willing to release Vasu if Diwakar can return to him a bag of cocaine he seized while thwarting the scam. Without any options, Diwakar agrees and proceeds to Vittal's nightclub where Vasu is held hostage with the bag of cocaine, hiding it in the men's toilet. However, this is noticed by his colleague Mallika (Trisha), who becomes suspicious and thinking that Diwakar is involved in drug smuggling, informs her superior Draviyam (Kishore). Both begin to pursue Diwakar, taking away the bag of cocaine from the toilet in the process.
Debut director Rajesh M Selva takes his own time in establishing his characters but once all of them enter into the Insomnia pub (where the whole story takes place), things start moving like a tracer bullet and the tension settles down only during the climax. Kamal Haasan has once again proved his inimitable acting prowess with a wide range of expressions. The high octane kitchen stunt between, Kamal and Trisha is mind-boggling, kudos to both the actors for clinching the authentic action sequence in style. The other actors including Prakash Raj as the vehement drug lord and Kishore as the double-dealing police officer have given wonderful performances. Thoongaa Vanam’s big strengths are its music composer Ghibran and cinematographer Sanu Varghese, together they have taken the film to a different level, not to forget the simon-pure sound design by Kunal Rajan. Overall, Thoongaa Vanam is a stylish thriller.
Rating : 3.5/5
