Actor Sarath Kumar and Mrs. Vimala Britto at Social Impact Awards

Students pave the way for a socially responsible City. Showcasing and recognition of projects done by students of various colleges in and around Chennai which has inspired and changed lives of many people and children with an Awards program was held at Kumara Raja Muthiah Hall,Chettinad Vidhyashram Chennai.

Chief Guest  Actor Sarath Kumar and  Guest of Honour Mrs. Vimala Britto, Chairperson, St Britto's College took part in the event and distributed the Social Impact Awards to the students of various colleges & School.

An Awards program installed by Rotaract (Youth wing of Rotary Organisation) 

Some of the projects being awarded are:

PMR Engineering College -

Rotaract Club conduted a free "Eye checkup camp" and "Stem cell donation" Nearly 150 peoples have checked their eyes and provided free spectacles for who required. Nearly 125 students have been donated their stem cells samples. It was very useful for many poor people in the adaiyalampattu village people.

Womens Christian College -

Rotaract Club conducted a free "HI V" is an initiative by the Rotaract Club of Women's Christian College, aimed at bringing light into the lives of children infected and/or affected with HIV. The HIV virus which gradually shuts down their immune system has also cruelly shut them off from mainstream education and social acceptance as equal children.

Inorder to bring about a difference in their lives and give them two unforgettable days, we planned a series of events. The first on the agenda, was a drawing competition, " Chitrakala" conducted for the children infected/affected by HIV. This event was held on the 9th of November in 8 homes,

across four districts- Chennai, Thiruvallur, Tirunelveli and Namakkal. Over 188 enthusiastic kids wield their brushes on the topic "My Dream World".

The 55 winners from the three categories- Age groups :7-9, 10-12 and 13-16 yrs. joined RC WCC for 2 days on the 29th and 30th of November 2014 for a time of laughter and entertainment. The kids from homes outside Chennai arrived by bus, on the morning of 29th. Vans and cabs were arranged for transportation of the kids from homes in Chennai to the college campus.

Following their arrival on the morning of Saturday, 29th November 2014 in the college campus, the children were provided with a sumptuous breakfast. Rotaractors accompanied the children, on a walk around the lush green campus of WCC. At 9 am, they assembled in front of the ancient marvel, Doveton House from where they were led in a solemn procession to the CE Hall, accompanied by, the Principal of Women's Christian College, Dr. Mrs. Ridling Margaret Waller, the Chief Guest - Mrs. Rukmani IPS, Rotaractors and the NCC cadets to the tune of the college band.

Power Rangers is our ongoing project for the past 3 years. The objective of the project is to create sportsmanship among the children of MONFORT SIRAGUGAL. The children are Deaf and Dumb.

Ethiraj College -

The following are a few projects done by the rotaractors of the college:

 ·        The board members conducted a medical camp at red hills and provided a free health and blood pressure checkup for children and old aged people and provided them with medicines. The medicines were provided by Mehta Hospitals.

·        The members of the club visited TamilNadu Welfare Association and provided them with 25 kg rice, daal, and necessary stationery for the kids.

·        The club members visited Sevasamajam, Egmore.  Rs.3000 was donated by a group of members from the club to the NGO for the betterment of the kids.

·        The club members visited Sevasamajam Girls Home. They provided the girls with a day's meal and stationery.

·        The rotaractors visited UthavumKarangal and spent a day teaching the children.

At the end of the project little hearts a Valedictory Function was held in the college auditorium where the two best projects of the club were rewarded.

Loyola Community -

" We had constructed a 130 feet pathway for Mithra Homes, at Kilpauk, a home for the specially gifted children.

" This pathway is mainly used by the children regularly to access their classes and Dining hall.

" The total project cost was Rs 3,50,000/- and was built by funds contributed (throughout the year 2013-14) by our Parent Club - Rotary Club of Chennai Sun City, Club members and our friends in Rotaract.

" This foot path was inaugurated on 15th August 2014.

R.K.M. Vivekananda -

The aim of pasitheerpom project is to feed poor and needy orphans. For this goal we have so far collected nearly 4873 kilograms of rice and provisions from various areas and distributed to nearly 36 orphanages in and around the city. This project contents the orphans and also brings a blissful satisfaction to young rotaractors for serving a noble cause. Apart from this a leading fresh juice seller whose shop has been named as "Fruit Shop on greams road " has also agreed to cooperate with us to brand this project in his premises

Rotaract Club of DG Vaishnav College -

An approx. of 700 kilograms of rice was collected from the students and staff of DG Vaishnav College which was then distributed among members of the Irula Tribe who reside in an establishment 100kms away from the city. 5 sets of clothing were also provided to every member of the 14 families present at the venue. Packs of cream biscuits were shared with their children and a question and answer session was conducted to motivate the children to attend school.
