Review :

Uttama Villain Tamil comedy-drama film directed by Ramesh Aravind and written by Kamal Haasan. Presented by N. Lingusamy in association with Kamal Haasan and produced by S. Chandrahasan for Raaj Kamal Films International. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Kamal Hassan, Jayaram, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar, Nassar, Parvathi, Parvathy Nair and Urvashi. Directors K. Viswanath and K. Balachander plays cameo roles in the film. Ghibran composes the soundtrack album and background score for the film.

It’s the story of Manoranjan (Kamal Haasan), ‘the’ superstar. Backed and managed by his father-in-law Poorna Chandra Rao (K Vishwanath), Manoranjan or Mano to friends is the reigning star till he is forced to confront a harsh reality or rather two bitter truths in his life. Having seen the ups and downs of life, Manoranjan does not take too long to accept his future and decides to do his bit before his life slips out of his control.

He goes to his mentor, the man who made him an actor much before he becomes a superstar, Margadarsi (K Balachander). He pleads with a reluctant Margadarsi to make a movie for him as a parting gift of sorts for himself and to his fans. So, does Margadarsi oblige and make the memorable film of Manoranjan’s career? How does Manoranjan handle the many realities that surface in his life?

Undoubtedly, Kamal Haasan is the biggest plus for this film. His performance as an dying superstar is tremendous and will hold you emotionally. Legendary director K Balanchander is perfect in his role and brings a lot of depth to the film. All his scenes with Kamal Haasan are so heart touching and showcase the bonding between them. Climax of the film has been handled well and brings an emotional appeal to the film.

Director Ramesh Arvind understand Kamal Haasan very well and being good friends, he is perhaps the best person to direct him. Shamdat's Cinematography is a visual spectacle, especially during the 8th Century portions. Nasser is alright as the comic villain. Pooja Kumar plays a small but lovely role. Andrea as Kamal's illicit lover looks believable. Parvathy Menon shines in couple of scenes. K Vishwanath does justice to his character. Urvashi suited the role perfectly. MS Bhaskar scores brownie points. Ghibran’s tremendous background score which elevates the film to another level.

Rating : 4/5
