Sri Sai Ram Engineering College 15th Graduation Day held at their college premises on 5th May 2014.  The funtion was presided by Sairam College institutions chairman Mr.Leo Muthu, CEO Mr.Sai Prakash, Secretary M.Vasu, College Advisor Mr.Seetharaman, Principal C.V.Jayakumar and the Chief Guest for the occasion was S.S. MANTHA, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Speaking on the sidelines of the 15th graduation day ceremony at Sri Sairam Engineering College here on Saturday,The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Professor S.S.Mantha has called the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) one-year moratorium to engineering colleges a wrong move. There had been no demographic study done prior to imposing the moratorium on technical institutions.

“For instance, we need data on how many students appeared for and passed in the class X and XII examinations, the courses they join, whether they migrate to other districts, how many drop out, etc. Based on a demographic profile, a perspective plan can help identify pockets where a women’s college is required, for instance,” he said, adding that the industry needs in the districts must also be analysed.

Prof Mantha said there were several arts and science colleges in the country that functioned from two small rooms, but the UGC had not initiated any action against them. Coming down heavily on the developmental councils in technical universities, the AICTE chief questioned their functioning in not coming up with the perspective plan.

“No state has come up with a perspective plan proving the moratorium right. Decisions should be made on sound principles, AICTE has written to state governments, asking them to send their perspective plan, showing the number of colleges, students, facilities and districts which need colleges, but only Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have done so, and these too are sketchy,” the AICTE chief said.

When private institutions are willing to put in infrastructure and comply by the regulator’s norms, how can you stop them from being set up, said S.S. Mantha, Chairman, (AICTE), on the recent one-year moratorium by University Grants Commission on setting up new engineering colleges. Based on the number of students who will enter higher education institutions, he said, expansion was required.

On processing of applications for new colleges, he said, “We have filed an application in the court seeking a two-month extension because we need at least that much time to complete the process. He said the admission process would not be delayed if they were given the extension soon.
Showering praise on Sairam Engineering College and its chairman Leo Muthu, Prof Mantha urged that the college start multi-disciplinary programmes to accommodate over 10,000 students.

In his presidential address, Mr Muthu pointed out that their college had alumni who worked in MNCs across the world.  “Companies that recruit our students praise the college for the discipline and values we have given them. This makes us feel proud as we have created responsible citizens,” he said.

Hailing AICTE for its regulatory role, Mr Muthu said that post-1993 the council had made big strides, especially during Prof Mantha’s tenure.

College chief executive officer (CEO) J. Sai Prakash, felicitating the students recalled how the college had trained students in several spheres, including personality development and communication skills.

After the speach The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Professor S.S.Mantha launched Sri Sai Ram Engg College Website for the benefit of the Students.
