Chennai, September 28, 2013: Indians
are fighting back, against heart disease! India has the largest number of heart
patients in the world, and Indians have the highest chances of getting the
heart attack than any other nationals. Cardio Vascular Disease is the leading
cause of death and disability worldwide, killing 17.3 million people a year, of
which 8.6 million are women. It is estimated that by 2020 Cardio Vascular
Diseases will be the largest cause of disability and death in India. This World
Heart Day, Venkataeswara Hospitals, a well known multispecialty hospital is
making an all-out effort to spread awareness and initiate healthy practices
among the city's citizens especially women and children.
On
28th September at 6 am, hundreds of students, Coastal Guards and Chennaiites
turned up at the Marina, for an awareness rally conducted by the hospital. The
rally was flagged off by Actor Karthi Sivakumar and Mr.Sylendra Babu IPS, ADGP,
Coastal Guards, Tamil Nadu.
The
rally is very much in keeping with the theme for World Heart Day, 2013, which
is “Take the road to a healthy heart”. Each year physical inactivity
contributes to over three million preventable deaths worldwide. Hundreds of students, the super fit coastal
guards and eager members of the public spread this message in a strong and
emphatic manner by taking a brisk walk in the fresh morning air. Distinguished
doctors and paramedical staff, including renowned Cardiologist Dr. Thillai
Vallal took part in the rally.
World Heart Day is
being observed on 29th September every year. This year it falls on Sunday,
29th September, 2013.
Auto drivers rally round – for training
in emergency care:
Venkataeswara
Hospitals is also organising another unique initiative – that of training 200
auto drivers and members of the public in life-saving emergency care and first
aid procedures for anyone suffering a heart attack. This was done together with
St. John's Ambulance Service that has been rendering Yeoman's service for those
in critical need of medical care.
Also, a free cardiac camp from
Venkataeswara Hospitals:
Long
recognised for its multispeciality services, Venkataeswara Hospitals is also
organising a free heart check up this year, one that every citizen should make
the most of. Blood sugar, Lipid profile which includes all types of cholesterol
,BP as well as special investigations like ECG, Echo Cardiogram along with free
Cardiologist consultation wherever necessary are done absolutely free of cost in this free camp.
Scores of chennaiites have already attended and benefitted from the camp.
Why such a buzz around heart health?
Dr. Thillai Vallal, Managing Director of
Venkataeswara Hospitals puts the purpose behind the hospital's
drive very succinctly. “Heart attack is the most predictable, preventabe and
treatable disease. Prevention is our passion !! If everyone follows the five commands which
are 1) Heart-healthy Diet 2) Adequate exercise 3) Stress-free living with
adequate sleep 4) Know your numbers {Weight, BMI, Blood Sugar, BP and Cholesterol level} )5) Annual heart check up
with follow up medications.” He also
spells out very valuable pointers to be free of heart attack.
- Walk maximum – oldest and best known
exercise to mankind.
- Add plenty of fruits and vegetables and
reduce rice and oily foods
- Say NO to tobacco in any form
- Regular medication and an annual check up
