Vanakkam Chennai marks the entry of
Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi in Kollywood as a director. Starring Shiva, Priya Anand
and Santhanam in the key roles, Vanakkam Chennai has music scores of Anirudh
Ravichander, cinematography handled by Richard M Nathan and editing done by T.S
Suresh.
Story :
Ajay (Shiva) and Anjali (Priya Anand) are
two youngsters filled with ambitions and interests of different sorts. Ajay
hails from the fertile lands of Theni (Tamil Nadu), while Anjali's passion for
photography drives her all the way from London to South Indian locales.
Narayanan (Santhanam), who is a house
broker in Chennai cheats both Anjali and Ajay into same rental accommodation
where the duo begin to spend time together and eventually fall in love as time
passes by.
Review :
Debutant director Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi has
smartly taken idea of describing the surprises which the Chennai city holds for
its newcomers and also the warmth and home like feeling the city provides. With
such an interesting theme, the director has pinned up two characters and their
love as the center of attraction with a crispy humor sprinkled all over.
Considering the making, Kiruthiga
Udhayanidhi joins the list of newcomers who have impressed with their very
first film (following Atlee Kumar of Raja Rani fame) in the recent past. The
director has pleased us with the presentation of the film and for this she has
chosen the right crew onboard.
Richard M Nathan, the cinematographer of
Vanakkam Chennai is the one who is responsible for the colorful presentation of
the film. Be it the picturesque locations of Southern Tamil Nadu or the buzzing
Chennai city life, the cinematographer's efforts have worked out wonders.
Editing by TS Suresh has helped in clean flow of the screenplay.
It is needless to say that Anirudh
Ravichander's music is the best part of the film as his tunes have rocked the
charts way before fans got to see the appropriate visuals shot for the songs.
Anirudh's scores have done more than what is required for the film in terms of
the background score too. The young composer has used more of violin for the
BGM which gels well with situations and sets the mood. 'Osaka', 'Oh Penney' and
'Engadi Porandha' best tracks among the lot.
The film drops pace in the screenplay due
to a few scenes which gives the dragging feel. Though Santhanam and Shiva are
the key persons responsible for drawing laughter we do not get to hear many
on-liners which are worth remembering.
As far as performances a concerned its the
three key stars Santhanam, Shiva and Priya Anand who have done it for Vanakkam
Chennai. Santhanam is the person solely responsible for bringing out the
laughter who is helped by Shiva at times. His very presence is more than enough
for the crowd to go on a laughter marathon and the comedian has done it once
again for Vanakkam Chennai.
For Shiva, Vanakkam Chennai is a good
comeback film. For Shiva, after a series of flop shows like Thillu Mullu, Sonna
Puriyathu and Ya Ya, Vanakkam Chennai has come in as a breather in his career.
He has played his part in tickling the rib. However, Shiva's reactions in
serious and emotional situations are still below average.
Priya Anand, the pretty lass is the one who
adds liveliness to the film with her presence. The actress' figure and
mannerism suits perfectly to the role of an Indian origin girl, born and
brought up in Western part of the globe. Her role as a Indian origin girl, who
gets back to her home town to find her
roots is something which she has never played before.
Verdict : A Colorful Family Entertainer... Vanakkam Chennai Welcome All of You to Theaters...
Rating : 3.5 / 5
