Rare Modular Knee Replacement Surgery Performed at Medway Medical Centre
Chennai, October 14, 2013 : A rarest Modular Knee Replacement Surgery
for a 26 year old youth was performed by a team of Orthopeadic Surgeons at
Medway Medial Centre, Kodambakkam, Chennai.
Vijayan of Katpadi was presently working in Delhi and
he was suffering from acute pain in his left knee. When he approached doctors
at Delhi, he was diagonised for a tumour in his knee and was adviced to undergo
a surgery for removing the tumour. He under went the surgery at the same
hospital least did he knew at that time his nightmare would continue in spite
of removing the tumour completely.
His family singed a sign of relief when it was found
that the tumour was not cancer but soon the moment of bliss was over when he
realised the surgeons, in the process of removing the tumour had stiffened his
knee. This was a shock to him, as this was not explained before surgery.
He could not manage to do any of his day routines with
a stiff leg. Getting in and out of car was practically impossible with a
straight leg. He had to depend on his family members for simple things like
wearing his trousers. He felt his life cannot go on any longer like this and
was even mentally prepared to lose his limb when at this point had an
appointment with Dr Arunkumar, chief Orthopaedic surgeon at Medway medical
centre Kodambakkam.
Dr Arunkumar having worked in UK for over 14 yrs has
vast experience in complex joint replacement surgery and key hole surgery,
quickly realised that Vijayan’s problem is complex and would be a great
challenge to reconstruct his knee as he had lost half of his top part of the
leg bone due to the tumour during his previous surgery and also his knee cap
has been sacrificed by the previous surgeons. His muscles and ligaments would
be non functioning and weak, hence forth will need special prosthesis to
reconstruct his knee allowing him to bend his knee as well as able to walk as
normal as possible.
The procedure needed a team of surgeons hence he
soughed the help of Mr Biggi a senior orthopaedic surgeon and professor at
Geneva University for advise. Under standing the complexity of the problem Mr
Biggi was happy to offer a hand during the procedure.
A team experienced surgeons headed by Dr Arunkumar
joined hands with Mr Biggi to perform a Hinged type Total knee replacement.
Considering his age and activity level this high-end prosthesis is needed to
get vijayan back to his work in three months period.
