Thanga Meengal, produced by Gautham Vasudev Menon under Photo Kathaas banner is one of the much awaited project as it has been directed by  Ram, whose debut project Katrathu Tamizh surprised audience as a bolt out of a clear sky. Yuvan has composed the tunes, while Arabindhu Saara has handled the cinematography.

Story :
Ram plays the role of Kalyana Sundaram, who heads a lower-middle-class family. His family comprises of Chellamma, his daughter, upon whom he showers all his love, his wife and his father.  Kalyana Sundaram is a guy who is over protective of his daughter and pushes himself to any limit to make her daughter happy.

Situations were Kalyana Sundaram is mocked by his father for his inability to earn money to run his family, compels to flee to Kochin. This develops a crevice between the father-daughter relationship and what happens next is for us to watch.

Review :
Films based on father-daughter relationship is not a rarity in Tamil cinema but director Ram has made this well-known plot look interesting through his making style. The first half highlights the sentiments and emotional bondage between Chellamma and Kalyana Sundaram.

Another important fact which has been thrown light is the partiality of teachers among students. Private schools which boast of offering quality education, have kids from below-average background. These students are discriminated by teachers which affect their moral and acts as an hindrance to their academic excellence. The director deserves an applause for pointing out this fact.

Director Ram's image makeover as a person belonging from a lower-middle class family is perfect which adds value to his performance. The director seems a bit uncomfortable with the emotional scenes as a few of his emotional reactions doesn’t look that realistic.

Child artiste Sadhana perfectly fits the bill as a school kid and “daddy's little girl”. There is nothing much to describe on her performance as her childishness and innocence by nature acts as a positive catalyst in boosting her performance.

Shelly Kishore, who has played Sadhana's mother in the film, draws our attention with her brilliant performance. The actress' effortless acting in the role of a homemaker who depends on his father-in-law to provide money for running her family, needs a special mention.

Arabindhu Saara, the cinematographer, has captured the picturesque locations well and his lens work adds more color to the film. The greeneries captured in the song sequences and throughout the film, give us a pleasant feel.

Though Thanga Meengal's track list has not got best of Yuvan's tunes, the back ground score makes up for what is lacking in the songs. 'Aanandha Yaazhai' is the track which remains in our hearts, while the rest evaporate.

Verdict : Thanga Meengal a Printed with Gold
Rating : 5 / 5
