Ponmaalai Pozhudhu is a love story which
marks the debut of Kannadasan's grandson Aadhav Kannadasan. Gayatri plays the
female lead, while Kishore, Anupama Kumar and Arul Dass are part of he support
casting.
Story :
Arjun (Aadhav) and Divya (Gayathri) are
school friends who look out for each other in each and every occasion.
Aruldass, who plays Divya's father, is always doubtful of his daughter's
relationship. Disturbed by Divya's friendly relationship with Arjun, Arul Dass beats
him up, which eventually paves way for love to sprout between the two good
friends.
On the other hand Kishore plays a
modern-age father who respects his sons emotions and acts as a pillar of
support. Opposed by Arul Dass, Arjun and Divya find solace through secret
meetings. Fate separates them apart and what comes as the end to this love tale
forms the rest of the story.
Review :
Adolescent love stories draws the interest
of the audience belonging to that age but director AC Durai has made the film in
such way that it has something for the seniors too. Apart from the amateur
love, the director has underlined the the responsibilities of parents in taking
care of their love-struck children and has also provided tips on how to handle
them without hurting their feelings.
The story, however is a very old one and
this fact drops our interest level instantly. Certain love scenes are new to
watch, but the absence of good humor lets the film down. As the film's
screenplay is lagging a bit with too much of love sequences, the need for
comedy or some other time out, arises to a higher level.
The only best part about Aadhav and
Gayathri is that they are suitable picks made by the director as an adolescent
jodi, and the duo have romanced each other well.
The films seem too melodramatic at times.
The roles of the lead stars does not carry any significance other than the fact
that they are the leads of the film. The emotional sequences are not so
impressive rather they are as this as a wafer.
So, when the audience become way too
dependent on the main subject of the film, the slow screenplay fails to keep
them tied up with the mainstream of the film.
Performer of the film award goes to none
other Kishore. He is perfect in the role of a father who keeps a silent track
of his son but at the same time doesn't allow the grip on his son to slip away
at any time. Arul Dass, as a narrow-minded father, has done his role to
perfection.
Anupama Kumar and Sriranjani, who have vast
experience in playing mothers to the heroes and heroines of Tamil cinema, add
strength to the film.
Coming to the technicalities, the editing
effort of Ram Sudharshan helps in clean narration of the story, while the
cinematography of Rajavel Oliveeran is best felt in the song sequences.
C Sathya, who impressed with Engeyum
Eppothum has not given his best piece of work for Ponmaalai Pozhudhu. The
melody track 'Adikadi Mudi' sung by Hariharan, Sathyan and Priya Himesh is a
worthy one for lending our ears. Another track which impresses us is 'Iravugalil'
in Karthik's voice with Steeve Vatz's rap in-between.
Verdict : A same old adolescent love story
with a matured ending.
