Director-actor Sasikumar’s yet another
commercial outing ‘Kutti Puli’ is directed by M Muthaiah, with Lakshmi Menon in
the lead besides seasoned actors like Saranya Ponvannan, Prabha Ramesh in key
roles.
While considering the recent hit
statistics, commercial films which have been presented with a blend of
different flavor have clinched victory. Ethir Neechal and Sundarapandian are
two standing examples for it. Kutti Puli happens to fall under the same
category, but let us see in detail in what it scores and what it doesn’t.
Story :
Mettu Patti is the village in which Kutti
Puli (Sasikumar) is portrayed as a tough guy, who does anything for the safety
of women and stands against injustice. Deivanai (Saranya Ponvannan) is Kutti
Puli’s mother, who hates him getting involved into unwanted troubles by helping
others.
Bharathi (Lakshmi Menon) settles down in Mettu
Patti with her father and instantly becomes the center of attraction for the
youngsters in the village. Guys, who try to propose to Bharathi, exploit Kutti
Puli’s illiteracy and experiment with him on what Bharathi’s reaction would be
if somebody tries to propose to her.
As days pass by Bharathi develops feelings
for Kutti Puli admiring his helping tendency and innocence. Kutti Puli is the one
who keeps off from women as he thinks that no girl should be associated with
him in the name of marriage as she might get affected due to his risk prone
life.Did Bharathi marry Kutti Puli and how he gets rid of his rivals forms the
rest of the story.
Review :
Director Muthaiah has delivered yet another
commercial masala entertainer which comes loaded with action, sentiment, comedy
and most importantly, some good music. Though the film is a typical commercial
formula and the storyline is familiar, the climax is the one which is something
which we have not seen before.
The filmmaker has made use of the sentiments
of motherhood to good effect. Though the sentiments are one among the number of
commercial ingredients added in the film, actress Saranya Ponvannan’s
performance has made it more impactful.
Apart from action, comedy and love
sequences, sentiment plays a major role in the film which is connected
powerfully to the audience through the roles played by Saranya Ponvannan and Prabha
Ramesh. Both these actresses look so authentic in the role of village mothers
and the director has given them a tanned look which adds much more value to
their look.
Saranya has very well portrayed the sentimental
values of a mother who tries to pull his own son out of violence and longs for
his wellbeing.Prabha Ramesh acts as a pillar of support to Saranya’s role.
These two ladies together deliver us the mother’s love instead of Saranya
Ponvannan doing it single-handedly.
Sasikumar’s makeover as a rugged youth looks
convincing and the actor-director’s extra efforts put in for the action
sequences and folk dance numbers needs a special mention. Lakshmi Menon is good
with her expressions which is her biggest plus and suits the role of a village
belle perfectly.
Murugadoss, for the first time has combined
with Sasikumar and their combo tends to bring smile on our face at times, but
doesn’t seem hilarious.
Gibran’s album for the film can be
considered as the perfect commercial oneas there is a song dedicated for each and
every commercial flavor of the film.'Aruvaakaaran' is the pick of the lot which
is a dedication for lovers. 'Aathaa Un Selai' praises the values of motherhood.
‘Thaatiyarey’talks about the heroics off
Kutti Puli, while ‘Kaathu Kaathu’ praises the beauty of Lakshmi Menon.
Background scores for the action sequences are fast paced and adrenaline
thumping.
Mahesh Muthuswamy has captured the village
lifestyle, rituals and festival celebrations in authentic style. Edits from Gopi
Krishna showcase the scenes in a neat manner and acts as a lubricant for the
smooth running of the screenplay.
Rating : 3 / 5
