Nagaraja Cholan MA MLA is the sequel to the
commercially successful and critically acclaimed Amaidhipadai which was a
trendsetting political satire in 1994. Sathyaraj and Manivannan reprise the
roles of Ammavasai and Mani in the film, while the new additions are Seeman,
Raghu Manivannan, Mrudula Murali, Komal Sharma and Varsha Ashwathi.
Technical department of the film includes
cinematographer D Shankar, editor R Sudharsan and music director James
Vasanthan.
The film's story is not a perfect follow
through of the first part Amaidhipadai though the key characters Ammavasai and
Mani are retained in the second installment.
Ammavasai is now the deputy Chief Minister
who aspires to become the ultimate authority of the state ie the Chief
Minister. Manivannan comes in as the wise adviser and a friend who knows
Ammavasai in and out. Seeman plays the role of a honest man who works for
uplifting tribal people.
Sathyaraj is the CBI officer in charge of
the case filed on Ammavasai for murdering three forest officers who try to stop
him from selling the land in hilly regions to foreign investors.
The key factor which keeps the film going
is the chemistry which Sathyaraj and Manivannan share. Their pair pulls the
cart for the film right from the beginning to the end. What the film lacks is a
powerful content and a plot.
The director has made use of the current
affairs prevailing in politics like the power shut down and other social issues
which helps the film to get easily connected to the audience and make it more
engaging.
Ammavasai, as a fully ripen politician,
uses his tantrums like backstabbing, double crossing to feed his ever
increasing thirst for power and money. These aspects makes his role
significant. Sathyaraj has brought back the old Ammavasai back to screen and is
a treat to watch.
Sathyaraj and Manivannan's dialogues,
especially those which are used when pulling each others' legs down and the
counter dialogues are the highly entertaining ones.
Three young women who buzz around Sathyaraj
are a mere shower of glamor and diversion from the mainstream of the film.
Their roles are not worth remembering as those played by Kasthuri and Sujatha
in Amaidhi Padai.
Seeman fits perfectly well in the role of a
guy who is honest by nature. The actor has not scored well in the areas where
he needs to deliver powerful dialogues.
James Vasanthan's music is nothing more
than ordinary. Cinematography by D Shankar is technically sound and neat.
Despite of Sathyaraj and Manivannan handling
the whole show, the film falls apart when the camera focuses somebody else
other than the above mentioned duo. Their characters alone is not enough to
keep the audience engaged for 150 minutes. An engaging plot, more crispier
presentation would have made the film much more better.
Verdict : Nagaraja Chozhan MA MLA Real Degree
Rating : 4 / 5
