For the Tamil audience, horror films with the blend of spiritual beliefs are common and the target audience for these type of films are those who have strong belief in spirits and religion. Masani is a film which can be classified under such genre. Directed by Padmaraj and LGR, the film has Iniya playing the title role and features the comeback of yesteryear hero Ramki.

The story of the film is set in the backdrop of a village where an unfinished idol of Tamil goddess in a temple is the reason for the villager and its inhabitants facing trouble from an evil spirit. The whole film is tailored around this plot. Though the plot seems to be an engaging one, the narration is not crisp, though clear. The film runs for almost 2 and half hours which spoils the interest.

The young couple Akhil and Sija Rose have the duties of romancing, falling in love and buzzing around in the first half. Humor is inserted into the script in the form of black Pandi, who chips in as Akhil's friend. The first half misses the engaging factor a lot as the comedy and the duets are not interesting to watch.

Casting is one of the biggest attractive point of the film. Some of the experienced and well renowned artistes like Roja, Aadukalam Nareyn, Uma Padmanaban, Sarath Babu and YG Mahendran add strength to the film. Though their roles are not meaty, these veteran actors have delivered exactly what they wanted to.

Another major attraction is the comeback of yesteryear charm Ramki. The actor has been given a strong role which includes action packed sequences, romance and sentiments. Though being given a tough challenge onscreen after a very long period, Ramki has played his role with typical style.

Iniya has proved her capability to fit into different roles. A major concerning issue here is that actress is running the risk of being typecast as village belle. Her wide eyes are a perfect fit for a ghostly appearance and her expressions are scary enough.

Cinematographer Rajaguru has shot a list of night sequences which are essential to scare the audience and give a creepy feel. The night shots are impressive and inflict fear, and the area which the crew has left out is the special effects. Considering the standard of CG work and graphics what films use now, Masani is something way too far.

Music director Fazil has done a very good work in the background score. The tunes are worth listening once, but remind us of some of those which we have heard before.

Verdict : Masani a Real Horror Film
Rating : 3 / 5
