Sundattam Movie Review and Rating

Sundattam is a film directed by Brahma G. Dev which is based on the game of carom. The film is yet another addition to the list of movies like Aadukalam and Chennai 600028 which were completely based on favorite sports of people of a particular region. The film has Irfan Mohammed of 'Pattalam' fame and fresh face Arundathi as the leading lady.

Plot:

The whole film is the narration of the protagonist Prabha (played by Irfan) about his love story which is set in the 1990’s. Prabhakaran a.k.a Prabha is a youngster, who aspires to settle down in gulf countries through an agent. His life gets filled with more colors when he happens to meet Kalai (played by Arundathi) and falls in love with her.

Praba, who is an expert carom player, happens to play a list of other carom enthusiasts at a night club run by Bhagya (Aadukalam Naren), who is a local gangster. Prabha wins all his opponents and the club’s star player named Kasi too. Bhagya, who is a carom enthusiast, names Prabha as the new star player of his club and starts doing favors for the latter.

Kasi repeatedly challenges Prabha to defeat him and earn his lost pride, but keeps failing in every attempt which adds more to his humiliation. At a point of time Kasi decides to kill Prabha and on the other hand, Bhagya’s opposite gang sketches a plan to bring him down. The climax holds the answers for the questions on how Prabha get himself and his boss out of the trap.

Review:

For weaving a story around the indoor sport carom, which is often mistakenly known to be played by local street guys in India, director Brahma G Dev deserves applause. His screenplay is the biggest plus which quickly shifts the momentum of the film.

The director could have avoided the love tale as it doesn’t leave any impact in our hearts. The love track just serves as a filler to complete the film’s duration of 2+ hrs.

The best acting talent in the film is undoubtedly Aadukalam Naren, who has played his part perfectly as a local goon. Irfan is a real hero material for the future with his boyish looks and decently built body, but he needs to work more on his expressions.

Next to the film’s director, art director Mohanamahendran has played a crucial role in bringing out the film with an authentic setup. As the film is set in the period of 90’s, scenes shot in locations like night clubs, carom board rooms in North Madras, automobile workshops and junkyards directly reflct the dedication and detailing which the art director put in.

Britto’s music is not that impactful but it does catches our interest in a few portions.
