Karuppampatti is directed by Tha. Prabhu Raja Cholan with Ajmal Ameer and Aparna Bajpai in lead roles. Music is by Kannan of Tamizh Paam fame, and the support cast includes Jagan, MS Baskar, Srinath, Devadarshini, Chetan, Mahadevan and Archana.

The film’s story is about an educated youth who throws away the responsibility of earning for his family and leaves to France to lead a luxurious life. Ajmal plays dual roles as that of a father (Manoharan) and son (Kodhai).

Manoharan, on his death bed, confess the truth to his son on how he betrayed his family and the trust of the villagers in pursuit of earning a wealthy life. Feeling responsible for his dad’s wrong deeds, Kodhai decides to find his lost family root and bring happiness back to the broken down village. How Kodhai does that and what are all the odd he faces while doing it, forms the rest of the story.

Highlights:

Among the performers, it is Ajmal scores over the rest as the best. The actor has emoted only to the needed level which makes his acting look flawless and natural. Aparna Bajpai perfectly matches the role of a good looking village belle. MS Bhaskar, who appears as a teacher, tends to tickle our funny bone at times, but the comic portions fall flat in most of the portions.

'Tamizh Padam' fame Kannan’s music adds to the film’s entertainment value. Especially the song 'Disco Naughty Naughty Raja' sung by Bappi Lahiri, brings back the magical, feet tapping retro music and is a perfect entertaining number. ‘Oh Indira’ track sung by Karthik and Sayanora is another impressive song in the album.

Editor Lenin’s work has helped in a clean narration. Cinematographers Santosh Sriram and Sanjeevi Sathyaseelan done well in maintaining the 80’s feel in the flashback sequences.

The art director and costume designers need a special mention for their efforts put into maintain the 80’s look with the actors and with the sets.

Minuses:

A perfect commercial flick is one which keeps the audience involved and entertained, right from the start to the finishing point, but Karuppampatti fails to do it due to its ordinary screenplay.

The first half which shows the life of Manoharan, includes a good mix of action, comedy, romance and emotional scenes. The second half becomes too predictable and director has not taken any care to spice it up. More emphasize on the screenplay would have given a better shape for the film.

Verdict : Karuppampatti - Entertainer
Rating : 3 / 5
