Kamal Haasan's magnum opus 'Vishwaroopam' has Pooja Kumar,
Kamal Haasan, Rahul Bose, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Shekhar Kapur and
Jaideep Ahlawat in key roles besides a list of supporting cast playing their
part.
Sanu Varghese has handled the cinematography, Mahesh
Narayanan has done the editing and Shankar Mahadevan's company has scored the
music.
Plot :
Vishwanath (Kamal Haasan) is a Kathak instructor who lives
in the United States of America. Nirupama (Pooja Kumar), a nuclear oncologist
from India travels to the USA for pursuing her higher studies. Nirupama marries
Vishwanath for earning American citizenship, but doesn't gets along well with
him. Nirupama appoints a private eye to find fault on Vishwanath so that she
can get a convenient reason to divorce him. Meanwhile, a terrorist gang kidnaps
Nirupama and Vishwanath where Nirupama gets to know the original face
(Vishwaroop) of her husband. From there a tale gets a twist and the mystery
which unfolds forms the engaging second half.
Performances :
Undoubtedly, Kamal Haasan is the stand out performer among
the lot. Kamal Haasan has done full justice to role of a Kathak dancer with his
classical dancing talent and his transformation of body language and attitude
in the second half, needs a special mention.
Rahul Bose (Omar) and Jaideep Ahlawat (Salim) leave a strong
impression with their presence as the chief operators of al Qaeda. Pooja Kumar,
Shekhar Kapur and Nassar have played their roles to perfection.
Technicalities :
Sanu Varghese stands tall with his cinematography, be it the
sequences in the United States or the portions filmed in Afghanistan.
Art director Lalgudi Ilayaraja's work needs a special
mention for showcasing the caves of Afghanistan in the most realistic manner
possible.
Shankar Mahadevan, along with the company of Ehsaan and Loy
Mendonsa, has composed sensible background score which travels along with the
film's screenplay. The song 'Yaar Endru Purigiratha' forms the base of the BGM
which can be heard throughout the second half and the song speaks for Kamal
Haasan's transition from a subtle Kathak dancer to an intelligence agent.
Editor Mahesh Narayanan's scissor work has presented the mix
of flashbacks and current sequences in a neat way.
Verdict : Technically Sound and Engaging Tamil Feature Film. Vishwaroopam Build's a Mountain of Peoples at Theater
Rating : 5 / 5
