Samar Movie Review and Rating
Samar brings the combination of Vishal,
director Thiru and Yuvan Shankar Raja together after the romantic comedy ‘Theeratha
Vilayattu Pillai’. Trisha and Sunaina play the lead role, while support cast
includes some experienced campaigners like Manoj Bajpai, J. D. Chakravarthy, Jayaprakash,
Sampath Raj and Rajendran.
Storyline
:
Shakthi (Vishal) is a forest ranger who travels
to Bangkok in search of his lost love Roopa (Sunaina). Being a first-timer in
flight, Vishal seeks the help of Maya (Trisha), a co-passenger, to clear the
emigration checking and other formalities. On their way to Bangkok, the duo share
their personal experience in love and eventually become good friends.
Roopa, who promises to meet Shakthi in a
Buddhist temple fails to pick him up on time. At this stage, Shakthi gets under
the scanning of policemen. Sampath Raj, who works in Bangkok police, offers him
shelter and food until he finds Roopa.
As days pass by, strange events reveal that
Shakthi is one of the highly successful and celebrated industrialist in
Bangkok. Shocked to hear all this, Shakthi once again seeks the help of Maya to
get rid of the surprising problems he faces. The second half of the film reveals
the characters behind the unexpected knots in the tale and how Shakthi unties them.
Performances :
Director Thiru must be appreciated for
taking such a brave storyline, which is something new to Tamil cinema. The idea
of psychotic villains playing mind games with common people is good, but the
director has lacked in casting the villains in an impactful manner. The build
up which the story creates for the villains in the first half turns a total
disappointment for us when they are revealed.
Among the three lead characters Trisha impresses
us with her subtle acting skill. Dubbing in her own voice has helped in
bringing out the better performer in her. Sunaina hardly appears in the film,
but looks pretty in each and every frame she is shown.
Vishal perfectly suits well for the forest
ranger character with his toned body, dark skin and rugged dressing. Vishal’s
best portions are the action sequences in which he has performed exceedingly
well. The chase sequences in the streets of Bangkok, where Vishal does a series
of jumps and rolls, needs special mention.
Villains JD Chakravarthy and Manoj Bajpai,
who are hyped as Godly killers in Bangkok, have no such dynamic or threatening
appearance while shown on screen. Even the psychotic nature of the villains has
not made an impact among the audience rather it is funny and boring at times.
Among the technicians involved in the film,
Richard M. Nathan becomes the best pick with his sensible camera work. The scenes
which involves the locales of Ooty, the chasing sequences in the small streets
of Bangkok, slow motion camera in songs and the luxury villas of Bangkok are shown
beautifully.
Yuvan Shankar Raja, from whom we’ve not heard
a rocking album for a very long time, has disappointed his fans in Samar. The
composer, who sets the perfect mood for a film with his BGM hasn’t scored any
noteworthy tracks.
Editor Ruben has also played a crisp role
in the film’s presentation with perfect edits. Though the second half is a bit
lazy compared to the first, Ruben’s scissor work has clearly presented the sequences
involving shift between flashback and present situation.
Verdict : Samar a Different Line
Rating : 3/5
